Scott County Sees Increase in Non-Compliant Sex Offenders

Scott County Sheriff's Office

The Scott County Sheriff's Office is changing the way it checks up on sex offenders, and detectives say that's led to an increase in arrests.

Police say they caught nine people breaking sex offender registration rules this year, a 60 percent increase from 2016.

Detective Dan Grafton says he thinks it's because the department did its annual check-ups earlier than usual.

"A lot of times in the past they were done around Halloween," he said. "We decided we wanted to do one at a different time of the year, because I guess the whole point is for the offenders to not know when we're coming to check on them. We decided we wanted to do it when they kids are getting out of school and it's nice out."

Convicted sex offenders are required to register certain information with law enforcement, including an up-to-date address.

The task force went to the listed homes of 250 out of 380 offenders who live in Scott County. The 130 offenders who didn't get a visit are currently on probation, and have regular meetings with their probation officers, according to Grafton.
Nine out of 250 were considered "non-compliant," typically meaning they failed to notify police when they changed their address.

Out of the nine non-compliant offenders, six were either arrested or have warrants out for their arrest. The department says its following up on the remaining three cases.
