A long-time volunteer for the Salvation Army has died. 93-year-old Esther Rahenkamp, also known as "Captain Ray," volunteered every Christmas as part of the Salvation Army's Red Kettle Campaign.
For the past six winters, Captain Ray rang the bell at the large kettle in NorthPark Mall. She died Sunday at her home in Florida.
The Salvation Army says Captain Ray traveled to the Quad Cities each winter and rang the bell 8 hours per day and six days a week, averaging more than 300 hours of service every year. Major Gary Felton says Captain Ray was a small woman who left big shoes to fill.
A memorial service will be held March 13th at the Davenport Corps of the Salvation Army.
