Salvation Army Honors Bell Ringers

Salvation Army

The Salvation Army of the Quad Cities will have to tighten its belt. It missed the goal for its Red Kettle Campaign by $175,000.

Major Scott Shelbourn says experts have studied the effect of the hurricane season on Christmas fundraisers. And it looks like many people had to choose between charities.

In addition, he says the agency doesn't ring bells on Sundays. So they didn't have New Year's Eve and Christmas Eve collections which resulted in the loss of tens of thousands of dollars.

Despite that, Shelbourn says the local chapter of the Salvation Army is honoring volunteers who helped collect more than $650,000.

Asbury Methodist Church members volunteered 237 hours and collected $9,573.18. The Salvation Army also honored volunteers from the East Moline Rotary and Tim Weillenman, Jr. for helping out over the holidays. East Moline Rotary volunteers collected $727.00 in its red kettle. And the major says Weillenman rang a bell for more than 124 hours and collected $3,138.15.
