Rock Island Co. Board Votes To Downsize, End Benefits

The Rock Island County Board voted Tuesday night to reduce the size of the board from 25 to 15, and to eliminate pension and health benefits for members.

The original proposal would have ended benefits next month, but the date was pushed back to June in a compromise.

Downsizing the board won't happen until after the 2020 census. Last night's vote was non-binding, because there will be a new board at that point. But before the vote, board member Drue Mielke from Coal Valley said it was important to take a stance on something the public has been asking for since 2012.

He said the vote will act as precedent for future board members who will be responsible for the decision.
