Here's how the Quad Cities is commemorating soldiers this Memorial Day weekend:
Saturday, May 27, 10 a.m.
Hero Street Memorial Program - 1st Avenue and 2nd Street, Silvis
Keynote Speaker Brigadier General Richard B. Dix will help honor soldiers serving in the U.S. military. Dix served in the military for over 25 years. Members of the Mexican American Veterans Association (MAVA) will perform the gun salute and taps.
Monday, May 29 , 10:45 a.m.
Rock Island National Cemetery, Arsenal Island
Mike Matson, Davenport's 7th ward alderman, will be the keynote speaker. Matson retired as a sergeant major after 22 years in the Army. He worked in special operations command in both Afghanistan and Qatar. The ceremony will also include music by the CASI New Horizons Band.
Monday, May 29, 11 a.m.
Milan American Legion, 515 W 1st Avenue, Milan
Post Honor Guard Commander Jim Bivens will host the ceremony, which includes laying a memorial wreath at the base of the monument, and a ceremonial rifle salute. Attendees are invited to join the Milan Legionnaires for a lunch after the ceremony.
