QC Seniors Seek Relief from Heat

CASI.org

Some senior citizens are preparing to protect themselves from the heat this summer.

They're requesting free fans from CASI, the Center for Active Seniors in Davenport.

CASI collects donated fans from the community each year to give to people over age 50 and older.

Director of Senior Services Kathy Horrell (HOR-uhl) says she's been getting calls from people requesting fans since April.

"The summer months are an extremely dangerous time of the year for older adults," Horrell said. "We tend to have health conditions that can inhibit the way our bodies feel heat or temperature rising as we age, and then in addition to that there are actually some medications that will prevent the body from sweating."

Horrell says CASI will probably start distributing fans by the end of this week and it's accepting donated fans or money for the "Be a Fan to a Senior" program.
