Direct flights between the Quad Cities and Washington D.C. will end Wednesday. Quad City Airport spokeswoman, Cathie Rochau, says the last flight from D.C. will arrive Tuesday night, and the final return flight is set for Wednesday morning.
After years of work by local leaders, and with great fanfare, United Airlines, began offering daily round trips last October, but announced in March there just weren't enough passengers. Through the end of May, 7,300 people flew from here to Washington, and nearly 5,000 used the service to fly here.
Before the flights began, local officials estimated 10,000 people traveled each year between the Quad Cities and Washington - because of the Rock Island Arsenal, and to make connections at a major east coast airport, Washington Dulles.
Funding was provided by federal and state grants, the Quad City Airport, and the Quad Cities Chamber of Commerce.
