Property Tax Cut Proposed for Dav. School District

Property taxes may go down next year for residents of the Davenport School District. The proposed budget includes a cut in the property tax rate of about 2 1/2 per cent.

Chief Financial Officer Marsha Tangan says this year's rate is 15-dollars and 83 cents per 1,000 dollars assessed value, and she's recommending a reduction of 38 cents.

"We are not levying as much in our management fund because we have a pretty good fund balance there, so we're going to start drawing down on the fund balance. And the other is we don't need as much in our cash reserve as we've had in the past."

Next year's proposed budget also includes spending reductions totaling 9 million dollars. She says a major part of that would be cutting jobs through attrition, not layoffs.

"We had an early retirement incentive  that we offered this year - we had 42 employees take advantage of that. So that opened up some positions that we can then reduce and not affect any staff people."

The Davenport district will also save money by changing the starting times for students which will allow for the re-organization of bus routes, and less money spent on transportation.

A public hearing and final approval of next year's budget is set for April 9th, so it can be submitted to the state by the April 15th deadline.

After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
