Last summer, the Scott County Waste Commission started single-stream recycling. But lithium and re-chargeable batteries are not on the list of things to "Go All In" (that's the name of the ad campaign to promote the program).
Spokeswoman Brandy Welvaert says residents can help prevent fires at the recycling center in Davenport — she says don't put lithium or rechargeable batteries out for recycling. Don't put them in the trash either.
Scott and Rock Island County residents can drop them off for free at the Electronic Demanufacturing Facility at 1048 E. 59th Street, Davenport, Ia. between 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 8 a.m. until noon on the first Saturday of each month.
Single use, alkaline household batteries should be thrown in the garbage because they're more trouble than they're worth. The manager of the Interstate Battery store in Rock Island says currently, recyclers charge 14 cents per pound to accept alkaline batteries.
