Now in its 30th year, a Quad Cities summer event has won some national recognition. Tug Fest in LeClaire and Port Byron has been listed by Motel 6 as one of "America's Top 6 Quirkiest Summer Festivals."
The festival kicked off Thursday night and runs through Saturday with live music, carnival rides, food, a parade, and fireworks. But the main event will be held Saturday afternoon when teams "face off" across the Mississippi River between the two towns for the annual tug of war.
Barge and boat traffic will stop for two hours, beginning at 12:30, and a 24-hundred foot rope will be stretched from LeClaire to Port Byron. Eleven teams will compete on each side of the river.
The other quirky summer events, as listed by Motel 6, include the Duck Tape Festival in Avon Ohio, Gilroy Garlic Festival in California, and the annual Bat Fest in Austin Texas.
