Officer Cleared in Suspect Shooting

Scott County Attorney

A Bettendorf man shot by police last month now faces charges, and the officer who wounded him has been cleared. 19 year old Joshua Price is charged with burglary, kidnapping, assault while participating in a felony, and assault on a police officer.

He is in custody at the Scott County Jail.

According to police, on December 19, Price entered the Hobby Lobby store on Kimberly Road in Bettendorf after the store had closed for the night, but while employees were still inside. He showed what appeared to be a handgun to the store manager and ordered other employees to leave while holding the manager inside the store. The gun was an airsoft gun modified to look like a handgun.

After police arrived and tried repeatedly to get him to surrender, Price pointed his gun at the officers and Lieutenant Kent Keeshan fired four shots at Price, striking him three times. Price was treated for non life threatening injuries.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and Scott County attorney Mike Walton determined the officer's use of deadly force was reasonable under the circumstances.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
