The former Pro Build main building on First Avenue in Silvis, with work already underway for R.P. Lumber.

After being vacant for several years, a key commercial property in downtown Silvis will re-open soon. R.P. Lumber, based in Edwardsville, Illinois has bought the former site of Pro Build Contractor Supply at 1301 First Avenue.

The realtor for the sale was John Corelis, senior vice president for NAI Ruhl Commercial Company. He says the seven acre property in Silvis has a total of 84,000 square feet "under roof," including 37,000 in the retail building along First Avenue.

"The new owners are very pleased with the property because normally properties that they take over require a lot of changes, a lot of investment. In this case, it will be less than normal."

Corelis thinks R.P. Lumber plans to open the new store in March.

The company was founded in 1977, and now has a total of 65 stores in Missouri and Illinois, including Galesburg, Dixon, Macomb, Princeton, Peoria, and Ottawa.

The former site of the Ice House in downtown Silvis was sold to Payless Cashways in the 1970's, and later to Pro Build, until it moved to north Davenport several years ago.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
