New MLK Center to Tell 'History of African American Experience'

A new center will tell the untold stories of African Americans and people of color in the Quad Cities. In November, a group called the Friends of Martin Luther King will open its new Interpretive Center, on the corner of 5th and Brady Streets in Davenport.

The president, Ryan Saddler, says the group formed in 2013, to find the best way to honor Martin Luther King in Davenport. It decided to open an interactive center for cultural events and exhibits.

Saddler hopes informing residents about the history of race relations in the area will help them better understand the problems with race today.
He says the King Interpretive Center is on the ground floor of a three-story apartment complex, called Newbury Living. One-third of the property is owned by Davenport, and will eventually include an outdoor plaza.

Saddler says the Friends group needs to raise about $1 million for the center's displays and kiosks, and the plaza space.

But the Martin Luther King Interpretive Center should be open to the public in November.
