the new NWS building at the Davenport airport.

We probably won't notice a difference, but the Quad Cities office of the National Weather Service has moved. It officially began issuing forecasts and warnings Thursday afternoon from a new building, close to the old building, at the Davenport Airport.

Meteorologist Steve Kuhl says that after 22 years in the former offices, the weather service decided more modern and up-to-date equipment and facilities were needed here.

"I wouldn't use the word 'army,' but there's a lot of people here - people from all over the country who are working on setting up our radar, our NOAA weather radio, our computer systems, moving furniture, and moving in boxes. It's kind of like moving your home but with real fancy stuff."

The move began on Tuesday and the new offices became operational late Thursday afternoon.

Kuhl says during the move, and Wednesday's storms, several of the local forecasters worked in the Des Moines center so there would be no interruption in service for this area.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
