Muscatine's Pearls of Progress Project

The city of Muscatine has raised enough matching money to win a state grant.  Yesterday was the deadline to raise $500,000 to go with an equal amount from the Community Attractions and Tourism program.

The Pearls of Progress Project includes converting the former HNI headquarters into a new library, building the Westside Trail, opening a dog park, and building new cabins at Deep Lakes Park.

Muscatine's Communication Manager, Kevin Jenison, says the library will most likely be the first.

"It's a very good building, very good facility, except it does not have parking and that's really one of the biggest benefits of moving over to the HNI corporate headquarters.  There is plenty of parking and plenty of space for meetings and community events."

Tonight the Muscatine city council will discuss and may vote on a contract for converting the HNI headquarters into the new library.

Jenison hopes the construction will start as early as next spring.
