Muscatine Library Closing for One Month

City of Muscatine
the "new" Musser Libary will be in the former HNI headquarters building

this will soon become the Musser Libary

The Musser Public Library in Muscatine will close for a month, starting Friday night, and move several blocks to the former headquarters of HNI Corporation.

Director Pam Collins says the current library is in two sections - one built in 1901 and an addition that opened in 1971. But together they still don't have enough space for a modern library.

Another major problem is parking.

"We're in the downtown of Muscatine and all of the parking around us is metered parking - we don't have a parking lot for our libary patrons. And that was really beginning to limit our usage quite a bit. "

Collins says the hardest part for her was trying to figure out how to turn the former corporate headquarters into a library.

"We've moved past that so we're really in the exciting part where we know what we're going to move into, and we know what it's going to look like. It's not as unknown as it was initially - there were so many unknkowns initially."

And the move makes possible the addition of new technology, including phones and computers, plus when it re-opens there'll be meeting rooms for small and large groups.

Collins says the Musser Library will close Friday night, and if all goes well, re-open on June 15th, with a celebration on June 30th.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
