Aaron Ellis

A man accused of a fatal shooting in Rock Island last year is already being held in a Wisconsin federal prison.

On November, 2016, police responded to a call of shots fired near 12th Street and 10th Avenue. Officers found 37-year-old Richard Smith Jr. who had been shot once and later died at a hospital. A 16-year-old was injured but was treated and released.

Chief Jeff VenHuizen says on Monday, an arrest warrant was issued for 26-year-old Aaron Ellis. He's charged with murder and aggravated battery with a firearm, with bond set at $1 million.

Ellis also faces additional charges of battery stemming from a different shooting on August 7th, 2016 near Rock Island's Rauch Family Park. VenHuizen says three people were injured.

Currently, Ellis is in a federal prison on unrelated charges in Oxford, Wisconsin.
