Illinois lawmakers are considering legislation to better protect state workers after a deadly attack on a child welfare caseworker last fall. Pamela Knight, a Department of Children and Family Services employee, was attacked by a father when she tried to take protective custody of a child in Milledgeville. The 59-year-old died from her injuries in February.
Savanna Representative Tony McCombie's proposal would stiffen criminal penalties for attacking DCFS employees. Last week, a House committee voted against it. But on Tuesday she asked for a re-hearing, saying is would remove the ambiguity in current law.
Her husband, Don Knight, says Pam would have wanted Illinois lawmakers to approve the bill, and he's asking people to call their representatives.
Since Knight died, Sauk Valley Media reports the suspect, Andrew Sucher of Rock Falls, has been charged with five counts of first degree murder and aggravated battery. He has pleaded not guilty and his next court appearance is set for early May.
