Jury Convicts Dubuque Man of Federal Hate Crime

An Iowa jury has convicted a Dubuque man of a federal hate crime. After a three day trial, Wednesday the jury in Cedars Rapids found 40-year-old Randy Metcalf guilty of assaulting a man because of his race.

In January of 2015 at a bar in Dubuque, Metcalf kicked and stomped on an African American man until he was barely conscious. Metcalf also directed racial slurs toward the man throughout the night and showed others in the bar his swastika tattoo.

Metcalf faces up to ten years in prison, a 250-thousand dollar fine, and three years of supervision. His sentencing date hasn't been set.

The case was investigated by Dubuque Police and the FBI before going to trial at the federal courthouse in Cedar Rapids.
