Rock Island County will not have to ask voters for permission to build a new annex for the county courthouse. That was the ruling Wednesday in a lawsuit against the Rock Island County Public Building Commission.
The ruling by Henry County Judge Dana McReynolds followed a hearing in Cambridge.
When the commission was formed 30 years ago, it was limited to jail projects. State law requires a referendum to change or expand the powers of a commission like this one, and in 2013, voters in the county said "no."
But today Judge McReynolds ruled building the proposed annex is within the authority of the public building commission and the Rock Island County Board, without a referendum.
