Now that construction of the new Interstate 74 bridge has begun, Illinois will start preparing to connect it to the highway.
John Wegmeyer is the Project Implementation Engineer in DOT District Two. He says this summer, Quad Cities drivers don't have to worry about delays due to road work on I-74.
"In Illinois, we let our first contract on June 16th for bids to build a viaduct from the abutment of the bridge to the 7th Avenue interchange. That'll be our first tie-in to the new bridge."
The $1.2 billion project includes the bridge itself and nearly eight miles of interstate highway between the Avenue of the Cities in Moline and 53rd Street in Davenport.
Wegmeyer says in the fall, another project will be let for bidding on the construction of the new, six-lane alignment of I-74, between 7th Avenue and the Avenue of the Cities.
