Local Red Cross volunteers are helping Illinois and Iowa residents recover from flooding. Executive Director Amber Wood says on Monday, the Quad Cities chapter opened a shelter at the East Moline School District administration building.
No one took advantage of it, but she says volunteers are helping in other ways. On Tuesday, "We served about 40 hot meals to those who were filling sandbags and other individuals."
The American Red Cross in the Quad Cities and western Illinois recently sent a team of 13 volunteers to the Chicago area, along with an Emergency Response Vehicle. And two more left this morning to help Clinton residents affected by flash flooding.
Wood says anyone who needs a flood cleanup kit should call the Red Cross office in Moline at 309.743.2166. And for lots of information about how to survive a disaster, the agency offers an emergency app for smartphones.
