Help is available for people affected by this week's severe storms and tornadoes in eastern Iowa. Thanks to the governor's disaster declaration announced on Wednesday, residents of Scott and Muscatine counties are eligible for grants of up to 5,000 dollars if they meet income guidelines.
The grants are administered by Community Action of Eastern Iowa. And Community Services Director, Roxanna Claude, says the money can be used for home or car repairs, clothing, food, and temporary housing.
"It can be a reimbursement program if they've already paid for things - they would need to providc us original receipts. Or we could provide a voucher to the vendor who needs to be paid for the service that is required for the damages they incurred."
The program does not cover damage to garages, barns, and fences.
Claude says a one-person household can qualify for a grant if its annual income is 24,000 dollars or less, while the maximum for a three-person family is 41,000 dollars.
To apply, contact Community Action of Eastern Iowa in Davenport or Muscatine, and applications are due by April 24th.
