Goodbye East Main Street Crossing in Galesburg

A familiar sight in Galesburg - waiting for BNSF trains on East Main Street.

Driving through downtown Galesburg may soon be a whole lot easier and faster. A ground breaking ceremony was held Friday morning for the East Main Street Underpass project - that'll take traffic under the BNSF tracks on the edge of downtown.

On hand for the ceremony were officials of the city, railroad, and Illinois Department of Transportation.

This is the third major project in Galesburg to end the long waits at railroad crossings. The West Main Street overpass was completed in 2012, and the Bickerdyke Bridge over North Seminary and Kellogg streets opened in 2014.

The East Main Street underpass will cost 17.5 million dollars, with most of the money coming from the state, with additional funding from federal and local sources and the BNSF railroad.

Work will get underway this fall, with completion in the fall of next year.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
