Davenport officials are assuring residents the city is "open for business" despite more flooding in the forecast. That was the message from Mayor Frank Klipsch Monday, who says the Mississippi River in the Quad Cities is expected to keep rising this week.
Klipsch says last week, crews placed flood barriers at Modern Woodmen Park. And, portions of South Concord Street are now closed.
The Mississippi River is close to flood stage Monday afternoon. At 2 pm, it's about three-quarters of a foot below flood stage. It's expected to rise nearly two feet over flood stage by next weekend.
But, Klipsch says Davenport is avoiding the worst of the flooding happening in Iowa right now. Over the weekend, Davenport helped Cedar Rapids deal with severe flooding at the Cedar River.
The Cedar River is expected to crest Tuesday at 23 feet-- about 7 feet into the category of major flooding.
The Wapsipinicon River at Dewitt was seven-tenths of a foot above flood stage Monday at 2 pm. It's expected to crest two-and-a-half feet over flood stage by Friday.
