Flooding is still a possibility this spring, but the chances are lower than they were just two weeks ago. That's the latest Spring Flood and Water Resources Outlook from the National Weather Service in Davenport.
Hydrologist Jessica Brooks says two weeks ago, the first outlook said the main factor in spring flooding this year would be rain, and that's still the main factor now.
Two weeks ago, she said the chances of the Mississippi River reaching flood stage in the Quad Cities were 64 percent, but now they're just 36 percent.
The flooding chances, however, are greater for some tributary rivers. For example, the National Weather Service says there's a 76 percent chance the Wapsipinicon River will reach flood stage at De Witt and there's a 56 percent chance the Rock River will reach flood stage this spring at both Joslin and Moline.
But don't relax yet. Brooks says the forecast calls for rain during the next two weeks, and that could raise the chances for flooding along the Mississippi and other rivers in this area.
The National Weather Service will update its Spring Flood Outlook in two weeks.
