Federal Report on JMTC Workload

The defense department doesn't know whether to order manufactured goods from private companies or the Army's own arsenals. That's just one conclusion in a new report from the Government Accountability Office, or GAO. Congress asked for the report in last year's defense authorization bill.

One of the three arsenals is the Joint Manufacturing and Technology Center on Arsenal Island in the Quad Cities. Jason Gordon, from the chamber of commerce, says the GAO makes three main recommendations.
Gordon says members of Congress are anticipating a request from the defense department for another BRAC, or Base Realignment and Closure.

The report does a good job of capturing the angst, if you will, of Congress about BRAC. People who were around for the 2005 BRAC still have raw emotions about it, and they agree it has yet to produce the cost savings they were told it would produce.

Other recommendations are to make the three arsenals financially sustainable during times of peace, and to figure out when to order products and equipment from the Army's arsenals or private industry.
