East Moline Teachers Hope for Fair Contract

East Moline teachers could make a big decision on Monday. After months of unsuccessful contract negotiations, the East Moline Education Association is considering a strike.

Michelle O'Neill reports the two sides were set to meet with a mediator late this afternoon.

Summary

Spokesman Rich Palmer says contract talks began last spring, but reached an impasse by fall. They've met with a federal mediator three times. But he says during the last meeting, the district walked out. Since then, union members have been going to board meetings to talk about concerns they have about district spending.

A freeze on "step" increases has been in effect for several years. And the East Moline Education Association has proposed one "step" and a 2.5% raise. Palmer also says the district doesn't help pay for retirement or continuing education.

The union has 277 members who will meet on Monday, either to vote on a new contract or intent to strike.
