Dems To Choose Lykam Replacement

Iowa Secretary of State
Iowa House District 89 in west Davenport

Now that one Jim Lykam has won election to the Iowa Senate, it's time to pick a replacement for his seat in the Iowa House. On Thursday night, leaders of the Scott County Democratic Party will choose their candidate for a special election for District 89.

Party Chair, Thom Hart, says it's up to the governor to schedule a special election.

"Usually, especially during legislative season, you like to get these done pretty quickly. So we expect the election to be set probably within the next week - the date determined within the next week - and set probably within the next month."

Lykam represented the district for 14 years, and won the special election last week (12/27) to fill the vacancy in the state senate created by the death of Joe Seng.

Hart says 20 members from the party's central committee from District 89 will choose the candidate. He knows of only one person so far who wants to run - long-time party activist Monica Kurth who teaches at Scott Community College.

Scott County democrats will hold a special convention Thursday night at the UFCW Hall on West Central Park Avenue. County republicans have not yet chosen a candidate.
