Davenport Primary

Polls are open in Davenport until 8 pm for today's primary election. Voters will choose candidates for the November ballot for mayor and alderman.

Three people are challenging Mayor Bill Gluba who's running for a 5th term. They are retired YMCA chief executive officer, Frank Klipsch, plus Dave Hereid and Dean Webber.  Hereid is self-employed, and Webber works for the city's public works department.

Second ward alderman Bill Edmond faces two challengers for places on next month's general election ballot - Maria Dickmann and Jim Kealoha.
The fourth ward incumbent, Ray Ambrose, also faces two challengers - Matt Caven and David Sodemann.
And in the 5th ward, former alderwoman Sheila Burrage is on the ballot, along with Rita Rawson and Douglas Cunningham.

Five names are on the ballot for alderman-at-large, but one has dropped out of the race, so the 4 remaining candidates will probably advance to the November ballot.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
