The last Kmart store in the Iowa Quad Cities will close this winter. Kmart announced today the Davenport store on Brady Street will close mid-January.
Spokesman, Howard Riefs, says the store has 59 employees, who were notified of the closure this morning. Eligible employees will receive severance and have the opportunity to apply for positions at other Sears or Kmart stores. But, most of the employees are part time or hourly workers.
He says the closure is part of the company's effort to "reduce on-going expenses" and transform its business model.
The Rock Island and Moline Kmart stores will not be affected. The Davenport Kmart store will begin its liquidation sale in November.
