Channel Cat Water Taxi to Build New Moline Dock

Channel Cat Water Taxi

A new project in Moline will result in improvements to a popular bike path along the Mississippi River. The city and MetroLINK have entered an agreement to build a new ferry boat terminal and dock for the Channel Cat Water Taxi, at Ben Butterworth Parkway on River Drive.

Moline City Attorney, Maureen Riggs, says the new dock, near Western Illinois University's campus, will be the fifth in the Quad Cities. And it'll serve as the "home port" for the Channel Cat Water Taxi.

The $1.3 million project also includes a pedestrian walkway, and improvements to the bike path, like new lighting and signs.
Jennifer Garrity, from MetroLINK, says the Federal Transit Administration granted $800,000 for the project. Construction should begin this fall, with the dock opening next spring.

Riggs says MetroLINK has an agreement to lease the property from the city, for $1 a year, for 40 years. Moline will be responsible for routine maintenance on the bike path and near the dock, while MetroLINK will handle repairs to the project property.

She says the Moline City Council will vote to approve the agreement next week.
