A fixture on the Davenport riverfront for many years will leave Friday. The Rhythm City casino boat is scheduled to depart around midday.

A casino boat has been parked at the foot of Main Street for 25 years, since 1991, when Iowa legalized riverboat gambling. First it was The President, then later the Rhythm City.

Since the boat closed last summer, and was replaced by a land-based casino and hotel in north Davenport, city leaders have been talking about what to do with that section of the riverfront between LeClaire Park and the lock and dam.

Part of the parking lot has already been removed, and the land graded, and the city council will hold a work session on the site on Tuesday (11/29).

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
