Just one day after candidates could begin filing their nominating petitions for the primary election next March, some contests are shaping up for the Quad Cities and northwestern Illinois.

There are at least two candidates for Rock Island County Sheriff who filed with the county clerk on Monday - current sheriff Gerry Bustos and former sheriff Jeff Boyd. Boyd was elected in 2010, but resigned four years later after being accused of harassing a woman. He was replaced by Bustos.
Several incumbents have filed to run for re-election, and so far do not have primary opponents - State Senator Neal Anderson from Andalusia, State Representatives Mike Halpin from Rock Island and Tony McCombie from Savanna, and a democratic challenger for McCombie, Joan Padilla from Sterling.
The candidate filing period ends next Monday (12/4).
