Rock Island police hope putting up some cameras will help them reduce crime in one neighborhood. Monday night the city council unanimously approved a proposal to spend $60,000 from federal block grant funds.
Police Chief Jeff VenHuizen says the Glenhurst Court area of west Rock Island has been "plagued" with crime, often violent, including homicides and robberies. And after several meetings with residents, one of the most frequent suggestions is to install cameras.
"These would not be monitored live by a person sitting in a room watching cameras all day. This is more of a reactive system. We would go back after a particular incident and use the footage to assist is in the investigation."
The money would pay for seven to 10 cameras to cover the streets and alleys between 11th and 12 Streets, and from 12th Avenue to 13th Avenue.
VenHuizen says the cameras could be up and running within a month and-a-half.
