BHC Board Special Meeting

Black Hawk College

Facing a possible strike by employees, trustees of Black Hawk College will hold a special meeting Tuesday night. Following time for public comment, the board is scheduled to hold a closed session.

Late last week, members of Local 18-36 of the Illinois Federation of Teachers rejected the latest contract offer from the college, and approved issuing an intent to strike notice - that means the 160 members of the faculty, and professional and technical staff have the option of going on strike after ten days.

A union spokesman says the two sides began working on a new contract one year ago, and the previous contract was scheduled to expire last August.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
