Bettendorf Considers Changing Downtown Streets

city of Bettendorf
details from the feasibility study

Bettendorf is studying a possible re-alignment of its downtown streets. City officials held an open house this week on changes under consideration for Grant and State streets to help encourage business and re-develop downtown.

City engineer, Brent Morlok, says both are state highways now. The feasibility study is looking at converting both to two way traffic, with the city taking jurisdiction over State Street.

"State Street would be the lower volume, lower speed, and more pedestrian friendly of the streets. And Grant Street would need to be widened to accommodate the state highway traffic."

The problem with current configuration is high traffic volumes and relatively high speeds on both which are not conducive to shopping.

One major problem is the cost - Morlok says widening Grant Street would cost 21-23 million dollars.
The feasibility study should be finished by the end of May.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
