Native Prairie Plants

Want to know a little more about the Native Prairie Plants available as our thank you for supporting WVIK during our recent Spring Pledge Drive? Read below.

Thank you to the Singh Family Charitable Giving Fund for providing these plants and all they do to support the local ecology.

What plants?
The planting kit, our thank you for supporting WVIK with a gift of $180, will include a tray of native pollinator-friendly prairie plants. The pollinator trays consist of 12 (2”x2”) plugs. We will also send you the very popular WVIK, Quad Cities NPR, fold-away  totebag. Each tray will include at least 5 different species, with one butterfly milkweed, one grass, and a variety of plugs from the following list:

  • Purple Hyssop (Agastache foeniculum)
  • Butterfly Milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa)
  • Sky Blue Aster (Aster azureus)
  • Columbine (Aquileiga canadense)
  • Lanceleaf Coreopsis (Coreopsis lanceolata)
  • Purple Hyssop (Hyssopsus officinalis)
  • Junegrass (Koeleria micrantha)
  • Bee Balm (Monarda frstulosa)
  • Smooth Beardtongue (Penstemon digitalis)
  • Sweet Black Eyed Susan (Rudebeckia subtomentosa)
  • Little Bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparia)
  • Rigid Goldenrod (Solidago rigida)
  • Prairie Dropseed (Sporobolus heterolepis)
  • Spiderwort (Tradescantia ohiense)

Sun or shade? Perennial or annual?
The plants are all perennials and mostly sun-lovers. They will be grown in a nursery from seed harvested in our region.

What sort of pollinators will the plants attract?
Once established, they should attract butterflies, bees, and birds

Where are the plants coming from?
They are grown in a nursery from seed by the Scott County Soil and Water Conservation District and are being distributed by Nahant Marsh.

When will the plants be available?
WVIK will mail you a certificate the week of May 16th that can be redeemed at Nahant Marsh in Davenport on June 3 or 4. The plants can be  picked up at the Nahant Marsh Education Center from  8am to 5pm on June 3 or from 9am to noon on June 4.

Will someone show me what to do with my plants?
Nahant Marsh staff will be on site to talk with people about how to care for the plants.

Where is Nahant Marsh?
The Nahant Marsh Education Center is at 4220 Wapello Avenue, Davenport, IA 52802.
