Moline School District

Voters in Rock Island County have once again said "no" to raising the sales tax to help schools, but by a much smaller margin than the previous two times.

Even though state funding has not yet been set for next year, the Bettendorf school board has finished working on the budget, and will submit it to the state by the deadline next week. Monday night, the board held a public hearing then gave its final approval.

Once again, a proposed local option sales tax for schools will be on the ballot Tuesday in Rock Island County. Herb Trix reports. Polls will be open in Illinois Tuesday from 6 am until 7 pm. 

Land once proposed for a new athletic complex for Saint Ambrose University in Davenport, instead will be used by Assumption High School - for a sports complex. On Tuesday, Assumption completed the purchase of the property from the university.

Students who graduate from Carl Sandburg College's honors program will now have an easier path to a four-year school. Honor students will be able to transfer directly from the two-year community college into Western Illinois University's Centennial Honors College.

The Davenport School District asks why it has to cut programs and staff when reserve funds could be used. And why it can't spend as much as neighboroing districts.

The cost to attend Western Illinois University may go up next fall. Tomorrow the board of trustees will consider raising tuition, fees, and room and board by 1.7 per cent. Under the university's cost guarantee program, entering undergraduate students will pay the same amount each year for all four years if they graduate on-time. The proposed increase for those attending WIU in the Quad Cities is 2 per cent.Also on tomorrow's agenda is next year's student health insurance fee.The board meets at 9 am, in Macomb. 


An expert on education will be the commencement speaker this spring at Augustana College. Brandon Busteed is executive director of Education for the Gallup company. 

Starting in the fall, students from Augustana College will help the city of Clinton with a variety of environmental, economic, and social projects. Today the two announced a partnership to promote "sustainability."
